When dealing with vomit on carpet, you want to move quickly. If you let the mess sit too long, the vomit will set deeper into the carpet fibers and possibly even the padding underneath. Here’s how to clean vomit from carpet as quickly and efficiently as possible:

  • If you have dishwashing gloves, please put them on.
  • Use the spoon to scrape much of the vomit out of the carpet and into the trash bag. Once you have removed as much vomit as possible, tie that bag tightly. The last thing you want to do is accidentally knock it over and have to start again.
  • For the cleaning solution, dilute distilled white vinegar or hydrogen peroxide with tap water and add this to your spray bottle. Note: Use either vinegar or hydrogen peroxide. Do not use both.
  • After you’ve performed a spot test, spray the cleaning solution over the area where the vomit was until the carpet is damp.
  • Blot the stain dry using a clean cloth or towel. Each time a towel gets saturated, replace it.
  • Allow the area to air-dry over night.

Check your manufacturer’s instructions for stain care, because you will need to give your carpet a good clean.

You should pull as much of the mess from the carpet as possible using a paper towel. If the vomit is still slightly moist, you may be able to use the spoon procedure to scrape the vomit. Then, sprinkle layers of baking soda over the stain. Cover this with a clean towel for 15 minutes or longer.

Based on your preference, use the broom or vacuum to remove the combination of baking soda and dry vomit. For an easy carpet stain remover, use the hydrogen peroxide-water or vinegar-water mixture to moisten the stain and blot up the mess. This is the same process as described earlier. However, because the vomit has had time to set in and to seep deeper, it may take more effort to fully remove the smell and stain.

How to Clean Up Dried Vomit

Life happens, and you may be running out the door to the doctor or tending to a child who has an achy tummy. If that’s the case, that nasty mess will have to wait a while before you can get to it.

  • Use baking soda and pour it over the affected spot on your carpeting.
  • Place a towel over the baking soda for at least 15 minutes. Make sure the room is closed off to any pets if you won’t be able to keep an eye on them.
  • When you’re able to tend to the stain, toss the towel in the washer and vacuum up all the baking soda. (You can sub a broom if you don’t want vomit in your vacuum canister.)
  • Once all of the baking soda has been removed, follow the steps from Method 1.
  • Figuring out how to get vomit out of carpet isn’t a pleasant ordeal, but it’s a task that needs to be undertaken to keep your home clean. The ideal situation, of course, would be for your family to not get sick in the first place.

How to Get Vomit Smell Out of Carpet

Removing a vomit stain is often only half the battle. Even after the stain is gone, a rancid lingering odor remains. And once the area gets warm or damp, the smell re-emerges. What this usually signals is that odor-causing bacteria are still present and feeding on some leftover vomit residue.

For very faint whiffs, try sponging the area with warm water to dissolve and remove any bits of residue. Once dry, work a little baking soda into the fabric with a soft brush. Let it sit for 15 minutes to 30 minutes, then vacuum.

To remove stubborn or strong odors, use an enzyme-based carpet and upholstery cleaner formulated for dog poop and pet stains according to label directions. After rinsing, cover the area with a moist towel and keep the towel moist for up to 72 hours to keep the carpet cleaner working to remove the stain and the smell thoroughly.

Can You Get Sick From Cleaning Up Vomit?

Yes, especially if an appropriate disinfectant is not used to clean up potentially contaminated areas. Highly contagious norovirus, can make you sick. Norovirus, also known as the “stomach flu” or “winter vomiting bug,” is a leading cause of foodborne illness outbreaks in the U.S.

The University of Minnesota Extension provides these guidelines to prevent illness while cleaning up vomit:

  • Safeguard yourself by using gloves, a mask, and protective clothing.
  • Thoroughly clean and disinfect all surfaces.
  • Maintain a two-hour restriction, preventing pets and other individuals from accessing the area after cleaning.
